Brockham Bonfire Celebrations delivered what it said on the label again this year. Stunning fireworks, fancy dress and Olympic and Jubilee themed night of spontaneous celebration, an Olympic Torch carrier and of course a nearly perfectly symmetrical bonfire. We introduced Derek Chitty to the role as Pig Auctioneer, a job he undertook with initial nervousness, energy and enthusiasm.

The weather did what it could to dampen and hamper proceedings both during building and the day beforehand and even included a hail storm the day before. Our car parking plans had to remain ‘liquid’ until bonfire morning when the decision was taken to abandon some of the fields.

On Bonfire Day the Village Hall was filled with youngsters in Fancy Dress. The evenings proceedings continued apace, with a refurbished ‘kiddie cart’ carrying the children of committee members, the traditional torchlight parade, the ceremonial fixing of the Guy to the Fire, a circle of perfectly burning torches, a guest ‘first torch’ from Moira Swan and hearty cheers from the crowd. Then smoke, little warmth and a few flashes of flame as the perfect bonfire refused to burn. Many of our 50 plus bonfire night residents have commented that this was a ‘first’. No surprising really as the bonfire build was mainly in the wet. If it wasn’t built in the wet the tree loppings were. We then say ‘fantastic fireworks’ under a clear sky with no bonfire smoke obscuring the spectacle.
